Little Old Lady Food

Well, sophisticated little old lady.
Yikes, it is not my style. A salad of leftover salmon and leftover artichoke hearts, some minced scallion, heartily (or heart-stoppingly) bound with mayonnaise, and paved with macaroni. This was not a pasta salad, it was a "pass"-ta salad, as my mother in law used to call it. Eek!
Old-fashioned. Horrors, and not at all retro-cute like casseroles and slow cookers.
It turned out neither of us really wanted this meal. Signals got crossed when we were trying to decide how to use the leftovers. Cranky actually cranked a little, until he shut up and a look of mild bliss (I'll give him mild) came over his face. The longer you ate it, the more satisfying it became.
It was pretty good, but we made too much. We didn't save the extras...

The magic of mayonnaise.I especially love the use of "salad" style macaroni. :)

Love old fashioned food, it has been around for so long for a reason :)

Greg: OMG, you noticed. It IS salad macaroni. In another brand, though, it's called ditalini. :)

Mouse: I love nostalgia food for nostalgic reasons. But what you said about old-fashioned food being around forever because it's good -- well, that's true.
I have a collection of antique American cookbooks (quite haphazard). I like the Ladies Guild from Dallas, Texas, things like that. So homey, corny.

I haven't seen a salad with that kind of pasta in fo-evuh.

And your cookbook thing reminds me. My mom has this great old cookbook. Can't remember who it's from; I want to think it was some newspaper. It's American cooking by region and has a short discussion about the culinary influences in each region. Used to spend hours perusing the book as a kid. Now that she no longer cooks, I think the book is mine. I will pick it up this week when I stop by her house. Bet she won't even realize it's gone.

Is the Zoomie leftover Palace. Jeexe Loouise. I think you need some Gray Gooxe to stop this whinning.

You guys eat so healthily on a normal day that a little mayo won't hurt you on a holiday weekend. Don't you love being retired, when weekends are all "holiday weekends?"

Kailyn: Yeah, we searched pretty hard for this "macaroni" and now it's quite common in stores. Good in minestrone.
Get the book! Get the book!

Chilebrown: Getting a head start on President's Day? That's a dangerous holiday.

Zoomie: This is a weekend? I hadn't noticed. Can't tell the difference anymore.

Apparently I am a little old lady because this looks yummy.
But I'm not happy about being classified as an LOL - not even a sophisticated one!

Being a little old lady, I approve. I would eat pass-ta salad even without the salmon, remembering the pass-t. Mayonnaise rules.

Pink Granite: LOL was a term of scoffing respect by SF Chronicle columnist, Herb Caen. Now that I'm little and old, it really doesn't bother me! Food was good, too.

Kudzu: You crack me up! Have you considered going into writing??? :D

Did you have some ambrosia for dessert? ;)

cookiecrumb said...

EB: Har!! Oh, I like that. I don't know if I like ambrosia (tangerines and coconut?) but it sounds spot on. Must try. Thanks.

Some old-fashioned food is rather disgusting, I'll admit xx

Mouse: Yes. We try to avoid disgusting! :)
