Happy 2011

We've been waltzing Hoppin' John around the globe for a couple of years now.
Deconstructing it, actually. Just toying with the fundamental ingredients.
Beans? Yep (but not black-eyed). Rice? Sure. Cured pork? We'll go with a little homemade chorizo this time. Folding money (greens)? Oh, indeed, all seasoned up with cumin, chiles and garlic.
I hope my tinkering will still afford me good luck.
It was a plate of damn fine tasty. We're calling it Juan Saltando.

buggerbum, we forgot to eat beans last night, only got the greens bit right - this does not bode well *worries*.

Mouse: Right, and you worry about a sustainable marriage. You'll be fine!!! Nice new front path and all.

Happy New Year, Cookiecrumb. You and Cranky are most inventive. We had beans and rice, too, but at Las Camelias on the same plate with our Mexican dinner. Does that count?

I am sure that the original hoppin' John would be pleased to meet Juan. After all, I think that the original dish was made by slaves, combining foods from the old world and the new. You are carrying on an old and honored tradition.

Zoomie: Oh, sure, that counts! :) Happy New Year.

Greg: Fabulous wordplay, as usual. Yes, nice way to eat (and the first time I've made chorizo).

Nancy: That's a nice thought. Also, because I'm not superstitious, I can mess with the menu and still get my good luck.
HNY to you.

Kalyn: Happy New Year to you! Didn't you start making your Hoppin' John Soup when we first became acquainted? Enjoy your Phase One, kiddo!

Ah, yes, we have to stay together, for the sake of the path :)

I'm not so sure about the luck. I ate black-eyed peas (and braised hog jowl...really. And collards) every NYD growing up in NC. I've never been that lucky but I've not been unlucky either. So I guess it's a wash. For the record, I didn't eat BE peas on Saturday. Didn't eat hog jowl either although I found myself curiously pining for that sweet porcine flesh of my youth. 2011 might be an interesting set of months.

Mouse: Until the path graduates from college, then you can use your escape cache.

Paul: Of course it's just a superstition. I enjoy it because it's fun to partake of the feasts of other cultures. (And then I mess with them.) And you made it a tradition of your own, which you found yourself missing. Sweet.
I hope 2011 is great for you.
