Twinkie Tacos

Don't you always think of Mexican food as más macho? Lumpy, fierce, crazy-quilts of color and flavor?
We had some tender, beautiful bits of roasted chicken left over, and Cranky wanted to make tacos. He suggested beans (No!). Salsa. Cheese (No!).
The chicken was gentle and moist and soft and sweet (seriously). It didn't want to play rough with the boys. It wanted a feminine treatment, something tasty and mild and sneakily Drop Dead Awesome. That's the way girls are.
I got a pack of miniature corn tortillas from the local bodega, still warm and steamy. That was just cute enough, all by itself, to set the girlie stage.
Chicken: heated and torn up. Cilantro: just leaves. Salsa: something from the commercial hot sauce cupboard, stirred into yogurt to make it nice and pink and nice! And pink! A little squirt of lime for you sour boys. (I loved it too.)

This is not a recipe. It is a way to think.

Looks pretty, sounds delicious. I'd have to toss the cilantro though.

Pretty, girly. Some avo too perhaps? It's pretty and green & yellow and yummy & is a very good friend to chicken & to coriander (cilantro).

Recommend this for Cooking Without Borders. Recommend the name, too -- let us form a group!

The tacolitas sound muy delicious and they're pretty, besides.

Barbara: Of course. There are those who can't abide the coriander. Your mate from Sydney (Ms Brown Mouse) suggests avocado. That would be nice.

Mouse: Darn. We had avos in the house. It would have been perfect. Soft and pastel.

Zoomie: Thank you! Ricardo Montalban is mas macho!

Kudzu: Imagine, in this day and age, that we can even talk about girl food, with pride. Let's brainstorm.

"Nice and pink and nice!" Love it, too adorable. That looks marvelous. It seems like you get as much out of your leftover roast chicken and I do- it's my favorite addendum to have in the refrigerator! So delicious on its own, but malleable enough in flavor to become a million different things.

fresh, hand made tortillas make anything awesome. Even by themselves.

reading your blog post was like reading food-porn.

BigBang: Hello, stranger! Yes, we get about five meals for the two of us out of one chicken. Not even counting the awesome stock. (We have one chicken meal left to go from this bird.)

Roxie: We are just so lucky to have this kind of artisan food available to us locally. And so inexpensive.
Say, thanks for your remarks. It sounds like you really GOT what I was going for: simple and tasty. (And, hell, porn.) :D

Hooray for girlie power! Chicken and home made tortillas - sexier than Victoria's Secret!

Nancy: It's funny how this post is opening me up to a *topic* -- Girl Food. We used to be ashamed to eat salads in front of men. But I have a whole bunch of new ideas.
