Beans, Beans, Go Away

See this? Pretty, comforty, colorful. Perfect autumn noshing.
It's root vegetables with green beans, baked slowly and lovingly, dolloped with butter and a little chicken stock. What could be better?
Turnips, beets, carrots, potatoes, radishes, rutabagas, parsnips. Plus onion and leek. (They're kinda rooty.) Oh, and the green beans. An afterthought.
A mistake, if you can believe it.
Beans aren't rooty, but we didn't think that would be a problem. They're green and pretty and taste good. But they didn't taste good here.
Who knew? It seems like magical thinking, to believe that root vegetables only go with root vegetables. It's true, though. The beans seemed woody and strange and uncomforty.
Learning.

IT'S A FOOD PRODUCT, ESSENTIALLY.

Oh, well then, I guess it's ok. Not like it's a chemical or something that might burn or irritate or cause some discomfort ...

Patricia: I don't mean to underestimate you, but I hope you know that's a quote from Fox's Megyn Kelly. Not me, man!

I like the addition of chicken stock - good idea to add just a little richness to all that comfort.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and the Crankster. BTW, when did he start growing a beard? (A little bird told me.)

Zoomie: The chicken stock tastes good; no richness except what the flavor conjures up in your mind. We just needed a little tasty liquid in there.
Cranky grows a beard on and off all the time. Didn't you know him when he had a goatee? He will never let it grow to the lushness of your beloved's. (Did you see Chilebrown's photo?)

Yes, I knew the source, no confusion, should have said.

Have a lovely Thanksgiving. (And please keep writing!)

Love everything about this dish, and the baking pan seems pretty awesome too!

All Clad? (I tend to be so cheap when buying this type of stuff, I just drool at the All Clads when I see them)

Patricia: I give thanks for that. What a sweet thing to say. Happy Thanksgiving.

Bewitch: Thanks. The dish is glass, just one of those no-name things you'd find at a good hardware store that carries kitchen items. Inexpensive. Happy T-day.

Happy Turkey Day or unturkey if you are so inclined. Happy day wishes - but next time, steam the Green Beans and add them to the roasted vegs as a side dish. Just Saying.

I hope that 2012 can see another gathering of the friends of Cookie and the Cranky. I still remember the gathering at Zoomie's when I didn't know anybody. Now I'm a seasoned old hand, in fact, maybe a bit burnt along the edges. But not ever too old to stop appreciating what you do here - and to give thanks for more than Turkey on this day with Internet friends and a new rising of progressive consciousness. See "As time goes by" for a fantastic post on this. But in the meantime, always and forever, keep on writing. I like your food posts but I love your personality, your politics and your sense of humor that makes this blog so special. You are one of my role models and I'm just sorry that I'm not a better pupil.

Nancy: You aree right about the beans.
And thanks for the gratitude! You get an A-plus, young lady. I am thankful for you, and look forward to a reunion.

I'd root for that! I know...go back in my room. Have a great weekend.

Is this your thanksgiving feast?

cookiecrumb said...

Oh, no. We went all glamorous with mashed potatoes and turkey gravy for Thanksgiving.

Greg: Ha ha! You have always been quite the word twister. I admire it.
