The Oyster and the Carpenters, Close to You

Why did I never try this before?
Has anybody else tried this before? Because I will come over and damage your wind chimes for not telling me. (And the neighbors will like me!)
This is local oysters, smoked in the back yard. Ate 'em about an hour ago.
My parents had a lot of Navy cocktail parties when I was young, and the stuff they served was strictly off-limits to me. Hence my abiding attraction to smoked oysters. Nowadays canned smoked oysters creep me out, with the poisonous soy oil and Chinese melamine. So no smoked oysters.
But look! Pop the top shell off a dozen or so fresh bivalves. Slide them onto the top rack of the smoker. Wait a measly hour or so. You get smoked oysters!
The smoke was perfect, and the texture of the meat was very good, though a bit glued onto the shells for the smaller ones. Next time, I'd say shuck the oysters completely out of the shell, apply a little olive oil, put the meat back in the shells, and smoke 'em if you got 'em.
Cranky's perfect idea was to squeeze lemon juice on the oysters when we served them, followed by a drizzle of olive oil, and man. That was perfection.
I am so stunned. Why did I never try this before?

Okay, so how did you know that the elderly (much more than I am elderly) woman next door has -- count them -- at least six wind chimes hanging on her back porch? If you promise to break HERS, I will tell you I knew about home-smoked oysters! But I never did them, myself. You're intrepid, these days, and it sounds like a lovely lunch for you and Mr. C.

I have grilled oysters on the barbie but never tried smoking them! Gotta try that! Wind chimes always make me think of that marvelous movie, "Body Heat."

Yeah, I'd love to hear what you know about home-smoked oysters. I'm still in heaven. Woulda eaten another dozen if we'd had them.

Zoomie: Yes, we've grilled them too. Usually call them barbecued oysters in honor of Marin County, and because of the sauce(s) we use. Yum. But you gotta try this.
Body Heat! Great movie, though my takeaway memory might not be wind chimes. Perfect background motif, though.

I wrote about smoked oysters a year ago. I used my stove-top smoker. Good stuff.

Simply: Good luck with that! Remember to oil the shells if you can, so the meat doesn't stick. Can't wait to hear how it goes!

Oh, Kevin! I missed that. I'd been led to believe you couldn't do oysters in a stovetop smoker. I don't know why.

This is indeed a good idea. And since you live in oyster country, no reason to not do it all the time. Give me your address and I'll show up next time you give it a go. Or I'll just follow the smoke.

Please don't hurt my one and only wind chime! Had I known you were an oyster lover, I'd have told you before now that we have a specialty down here in Cajun Country... CHAR-BROILED oysters on the half-shell. Shuck 'em, put 'em back on the shell, top with some butter and chopped herbs, stick under your broiler for a few minutes till they look nice and plump and even a little charred on the edges (or thrown them on your grill for a few). These succulent little morsels ooze delicious juices that mingle with the butter & herbs. Promise, you'll want to drink every bit!

Hungry Dog: Yes, I'm afraid this one is going on the high-frequency menu. Can you imagine a smoked oyster party? You know where to find me. :)

Zoomie: I really appreciate that. Sometimes I don't know myself where these dumb notions come from, but I'm obviously carrying them around in my brain, and now and then, one shakes out.

Southern Cookie: I love grilled oysters, no problem there. Ive even broiled 'em. Wow, butter and herbs? Not all dicked up into stupidness with too many ingredients.
Sounds great.
Your wind chime is safe. For now.

When my brother was wee he'd eat the canned ones, they looked EVIL.
I've not tried home smoked ones, but will be now - thanks for the tip.

PS, all my windchimes are damaged :(

Holy smokes! That is a great idea. Smoke if you got em. I wish I had a buck for every time I heard that is the military. I'd be a frickin millionaire and not need my SS.

Mouse: I ate that stuff, too. It's ugly, and it doesn't taste good. The fresh, it's so good. I'm thrilled you might try it.
Your wind chimes are tired. All that time outdoors with no SPF.
