I got the hankering for this dish after Molly moaned, almost audibly, over it. She has never steered me wrong.
It is a bowl of kimchi fried rice, made with bacon and egg. It sounded startling to me, but Molly moaned.
It was OK. No, I didn't like it. I ate half, and threw the rest away.
The bacon. That didn't work for me.
I will allow the slight possibility that one of the slices of guanciale had a microscopic dot of mold on it, and the bad flavor could have tainted the rice.
But I doubt it.
Besides, I'm not making it again, even if it is the most delicious food in the world to somebody else.
It didn't work for me.

Wooooo, says the woman with the large jar of kimchi in her fridge! Can't wait. Tho Mr Pots is not a fan, am trying to hard to change that! (and we finally got enough sun to mow this weekend - how's that for boring domesticalality??)
I think it's brave of you (and I would expect nothing less) to post a negative review of a dish so highly touted. All too often we see just the opposite, where there is never a nay said about something recommended by a popular source. Hope you find something to tuck into today that will please you more!

Kudzu: Thank you! I'm sure I've done Molly no harm and I still like her. It looks like bacon kimchi fried rice may have originated with Momofuku, those silly kids. If I'd know that, I probably wouldn't have made it at all.
Your post reminded my of the movie we watched yesterday - The Tree of Life
critics raved over it. Me and the three folks who watched it with me thought it was the worst movie in the last decade.

Poor Frothy - he was doomed before he ever started by his father's name. I'm loving all these self-destructive Repugs.
Oh, and poached eggs on everything was a fad like kimchi fried rice is for you. Meh. I liked a few of the permutations but will not be making that on a regular basis.

Ha, ha. Oh, Greg, I got that blue bowl at Longs, before it turned into CVS (which I don't like). It was my lunch bowl for when I worked in an office. Easy Mac, gross stuff like that. I love the bowl. :)
I wasn't that impressed by the dish either and there was nothing wrong with my ingredients. I just thought it was kind of blah and a bit too greasy for my taste. I liked all the ingredients but not together. But now I've got a huge jar of kimchee in my fridge and I am having no trouble finding things to eat it with.
No worries, I'd much rather hear an honest opinion about a recipe. I could see how the bacon might not work, too much grease could easily make the dish almost rancid, or even the smoke from curing.
Just pass the chopsticks and I'll go back to eating my kimchi straight from the jar (yes, I'm too lazy to make it myself thank you).

Little Pots: For me it was the smoke of the bacon. Out of kilter. Now, you do know how easy it is to make kimchi? Laziness has nothing to do with it. You're just scared. Try! And... I love to eat it straight from the jar.

Ok, I totally dig homemade faux fried rice made with onions, bacon, scrambled eggs, peas, and a little local organic (nonGM) fermented soy sauce and a little pepper. I love it! It is my comfort food. But once, I too made a mistake adding kim chi, or ban chan that I spent really good money on from the S. Korean vendors that came to my town for 1 weekend. The kim chi or ban chan is so good with plain rice, so good on its own, but no good with scrambled eggs, bacon and rice. Bummer.

It's too bad the method for finding the good stuff is the same method for finding the not-so-good (or bad) stuff.
Do you like Korean dolsot bibimbap? I love that hot stone bowl and bits of crispy rice. It's sort of similar, but you get your kimchi first (an array...so much fun), totally separate, not in the same bowl, and there isn't any bacon.
Denise: I'm not upset with anyone who liked the dish and led me into trying it. They really liked it; I didn't.
Bibimbap has been on my radar for about five years, but there's no Korean in San Rafael (I think). Where do you recommend in SF? :)
I've only tasted this dish 2 places in my life, so I'm no expert in the matter. The LA place was best, but there's a place I like in Japantown. Marginal atmosphere and service, but good dolsot bibimbap. I believe it's Korea House vs. New Korea House, but darn, I'm not sure. They are practically next door to one another. Very confusing. I'll have to get over there again so I can confirm.
