It's Still Summer

Fall's more than a month away. Why am I seeing "End-of-Summer" stories and stuff?
I know the poor kids have to go back to school in August (and it's a good thing that wasn't the law when I was in grade school or I'd have found some way to go postal. I'd still be in San Quentin, marking X's on the wall in my childish handwriting).
I really don't need to be reminded of fall clothing, if you don't mind. I've got boots and scarves and hats; don't need to see Old Navy ads.
Nor do I particularly want to look at any swimsuit sales. It's been a bit brisk, meteorologically, this season, and goosebumps in my backyard? Not a lovely sight.
I'll tell you what's a lovely sight in my backyard. I have two eggplant babies, starting to grow. It looks like I will have several ripe tomatoes in about a week.
The tomatillos and the pattypan squash were complete duds.
But, we have cucumbers. Crispy, slicy cukes, needing nothing more than a dash of liquids from the condiment shelf.
I'm huddled out there, my fleece pulled up to my ears, snacking on those munchy tubes. Pretending it's still summer.

Condolences, Fancy John. (Not sure how to get that symbol, heh.)
I should have admitted the plant is also covered with inchlong yellowing fail cukes. At least we're getting three or four edible ones this year.
Carry on, and happy gardening.

Your bowl of cucumber slices look glorious. Back in the day...when I had a garden...the green variety (can't recall which green I grew) produced so few cucumbers it was hardly worth the watering, but my lemon cucumbers flourished. It went on forever and I loved it. I'll do it again, one day. Enjoy those beauties.

as for the patty pan, so not my fave. the good old (tube shaped)yellow squash, the ones that are deep yellowy gold? man they were sweet here in the hudson valley. kinda blew me away.

jealous? good. of course i don't grow them.

It's the change darling. Change of Seasons :)
This afternoon I walked home sans jacket and we've yet to turn the heater on tonight (8:30pm!)

I'm getting a kick out of your little fish, who appear to be attracted to the cursor. Feed the fish.

Denise: These were General Lee's. Never grew them before; they're medium boring but crunchy delicious. Win-win.

Claudia: I guess I need a lot more crunch.

Mouse: I slept in my fleece jacket a couple of nights! Still haven't turned on the furnace. It's very nice outside today; all over tomorrow.

Zoomie: You figured out the cursor trick! Have fun. Aren't they soothing?

Not to me, they make me laugh and distract me from the reading. I am field-dependent and have trouble ignoring them, but then, why would I want to?

Zoomie: Ha ha! You could use that old trick for "setting" the blinking 12:00 on your old VCR -- black electrical tape.

Here's hoping we get summer in September and October.

Greg: We are running out of time. Garden will not recover in the few weeks we have left.
However, if it suns up, I'll be out there with a gin and tonic!
