Bye-Bye, Birdie

Remember those old toys, the birds that would continually bob into a glass of water?
I thought they were called "Drinking Bird." If you Google that, you'll get all the hits you need.
Turns out it is called "Dippy Bird."
What is the purpose of this inane post, Cookiecrumb?
Well, I can't help thinking Gen. Stanley McChrystal looks like a Dippy Bird.

Biggles: I am inordinately pleased with myself for this observation. You may need to notify the hee-hee police.

He does indeed, you should be inordinately pleased you clever clogs. I loved those drinking birds when I was wee, I'd watch for hours apparently.

Yes, I do see the resemblance!

My Grandma Denny had a dipping bird, and we loved it.

And, as one of the pundits remarked, Meg Whitman looks exactly like Benjamin Franklin!

Mouse: Clever clogs! Oh, I love that.
Yeah, those drinking birds. Do you think kids today would be as fascinated?

Kalyn: My memory's no good -- I thought dippy birds were made from wood. But, fun. I liked the fact that there were no batteries, no wind-up key.

Zoomie: Ha ha! She does. But a little less regal.

Greg: I know!

When our lives were tied to LOOK Magazine, we had to pass a strange, narrow little stationery/gifts/etc. shop to the right of the doors of the LOOK Building in Manhattan. In the window, for YEARS, there was a line of those drinky birds bobbing and bobbing and every time I took the kids to the photo studio for any reason we had to stop and watch them and tell them -- once again -- that we were not going to buy one. They were a sort of guardian distraction that drove me crazy. I haven't seen one/any forever -- but that memory came back, thanks to you!

Kudzu: I wonder if your kids remember. Of course they do. Couldn't you have bought them one, just once? (Well, see, there are my parenting skills.)

BK: Sally, I don't know how it came to me, but I couldn't get the idea out of my head. Then I searched for photos and was even MORE amazed how much they resemble each other.
