We Are Growing Sugar

Last year I sat on the patio and looked at all the fruit and vegetables we were raising in the back yard.
The fruit is sweet, of course.
And the vegetables are, too. Not icky sweet, but happycrazy homegrown sweet. They still tasted like tomatoes, cukes, whatever they were supposed to be. But sweet.
And I said to Cranky, "We are growing sugar."
We are growing minerals and fiber and vitamins, too, but they all taste sweet.
It can't be helped.
This blossom is on the green gage plum tree. Even the blossoms smell sweet.
The plums will arrive in the summer, but for now, we are working on finishing up the prunes we dried last year.
How's this for an idea? Slow simmered wheat berries cooked with pitted, chopped prunes. For breakfast. Add yogurt if you want.
Sweet.

Slow simmered wheat berries cooked with pitted chopped prunes sounds very awful. At least you are sweet!

I love prunes with poultry and pork too. But I sure wouldn't kick that warm cereal outta bed either.

Chilebrown: That is a very funny comment! You think the breakfast sounds very awful, because you haven't tasted homegrown prunes with Full Belly Farm wheat berries. Still, I'll grant you: No bacon = very awful... for you.
xx

Heather: We've got a braise coming up with prunes and homegrown oranges.
You'd like this cereal. Beneficial nutrients for those with parasites. ;-)
I might could send you some prunes; let me check.

If I wasn't such a lazy baggage I'd harvest honeysuckle dew - that's pure sugar.
But prunes? *shudders* they look too, too ....

As a devout grain eater I applaud your prunes and wheat berries for breakfast, brava! I would eat that, no added sugar required.

Mouse: Wow, *harvest* honeysuckle dew? That sounds like a trick. Knowing me, I'd be out there with a straw, sipping from the blooms.
As for prunes... too monkey-poopie? Heh.

Era: You don't even have to be "into" whole grains to love this meal. I love the way the little babies pop in my mouth. And: No sugar.

Oh that sounds great! It has to be off the scale on healthiness too!

Anna: It's healthy without meaning to be. It can't help it.

I've planted my first vegetables ever. Tomatoes. I'm excited to grow my own sugar :)

EB: I'm excited for you! Tomatoes is what every first-time gardener should plant. Good luck.

Cookie, I only ever suck it straight from the flower. But can you imagine, if someone DID harvest it? Rarer and more expensive than saffron methinks!

Mouse: Oh, I would do that! I can see me lying in a hammock, sucking honeysuckle for hours. And to "harvest" and bottle it, I will hire some pretty young man to take it from my lips.
