Who Blogs on Friday?

We seem to be a lazy bunch, us food bloggers, with our three-day weekends.
I'm even lazier. Today's picture was taken weeks ago, back when the weather warranted this kind of rib-warming, leftover-using, special gadget-decorating dish.
Any ideas what it is?
Hint: There was cholesterol.

Cholesterol hints at either eggs, butter, or both. Hmmm....

Nikki: Butter, for sure. But no eggs.
(Your sig photo is the embodiment of "Hmmm..."!)

Out on a limb, here:
rillettes? Bunny?

cookiecrumb said...

Kudzu: Larger mammal. Leftover beef from Christmas. The gadget was a Christmas present, too.
(Speaking of rillettes... Oh, wait; that's another post. ;))

Did you torch something? You did, didn't you. It looks all toasty on the top! Oh, wait, a sausage machine? How many guesses do I get?

Lol@ Nikki's "Hmmm" pic.

Indian Pudding? or Cheesy Grits?

Heather: I know, it looks like a broiler mishap, but the brown spots are meat gravy that boiled up through the topping.

ChrisB: Uh, oh. If you don't recognize this, then I will never be able to cook for you. I mean, I know it came out ugly and wrong... but it's Cottage Pie! Made with leftover roast beef, veg, gravy... and the mashed potatoes on top have WAY too much butter in them; thank you Cranky!! That's why the "crust" is so melted.

dmennenoh: It does. But no corn beings were sacrificed for this dish. :D

Biggles: Pie, pudding... what's the diff?

BarbJensen: Yup. No eggs!
I will brag here that the groove design on the tater top is made with a cake comb, a special Christmas present from a friend.

Lannae: Looks corny, yes? But, no.
(Must. Have. Cheese. Grits!!)

Golly, that looks like spoonbread.

I am so happy you have a savory use for the cake comb :D

Oh dear, I thought it looked like white grits with bacon, chickpeas, and stewed plums! But I was pretty sure that couldn't be right...
Please pass the cottage pie.

Cottage Pie, yummy, the more buttery and cheesey the mashed spuds on top the better. If you want extra heart-attack points do what we do, beat in an egg yolk too!

Ilex: All your suggestions... *spoonbread!* ... have got me twitchy. I love baked goods.

Anita: Yes, but remember watching me eat that entire slice of your cornmeal/cherry cake? I might be a new dessert-o-phile. Thanks for the cake comb, dolling.

Peter: Huh! I tap out this blog in cuneiform and fly it in by carrier pigeon. Life is hard. :D

Anonymous: Have you looked at how delicious your fake recipe sounds? Mm!

Ms. Mouse: Really, an egg in there? OK, next time. Call me a cardiologist.

All such good guesses, and what a great way to get menu ideas...
I would not have guessed there was mammal flesh under there. Unless I had eaten it, of course.
I didn't know you have to comb a cake. Do they get tangles?

michael, claudia and sierra said...

no idea but i want some...

cookiecrumb said...

Moonbear: No, you comb cakes for *clues*, not tangles!

ceF: Well, it was buttery goodness, burp!

Ok, not to shout or be demanding or cranky or anything, but... WHEN on EARTH do we get to FIND OUT WHAT THE HECK THIS FABULOUS-looking dish IS? ARGHHH!

Yeah, um- that was my PMS talking, not me. Swear. But it does look like some darned good, sofa-curling, sock-wearing, PMS comfort food. NEED. IT. NOW.

Ilex: Oh, sorry! I buried the answer up there in my reply to ChrisB.
It's a sloppy, buttery Cottage Pie. Basically, meat, gravy and veggies baked under a mashed-potato topping. You are seeing the gravy bubbled up through the taters.
Very comforting, BTW, and such a great use of leftovers.
