I Know, Cheese Sandwich

Some times of year, a grilled cheese sandwich and a bowl of warm tomato soup are recommended — nay, required.
Today I required a grilled cheese sandwich, but the weather flipped back into summer temporarily... so it was recommended that the bowl of tomatoes be raw wedges, blipped with good olive oil and dinked with good salt.
For the sandwiches we used a sweet batard (undense crumb, not a lot of flavor intrusion) and white local cheddar. Pretty basic. The bread grilled up into sublime laciness.
And the house has an aromatic veil of cooked butter, a little different from room to room.
Heaven.

That sounds just the ticket. Our house currently smells of toasted olive bread - toast can cure many ills no?

Mmmmm. I was hankering for a cheese sandwich today to go with my celery root soup and hurricane remnants, but we had NO cheese. Not a bit in the house. Shocking.

Always a favorite, that simple, wonderful sandwich. It comes with memories of home, doesn't it? Comforting.

Yum! I've been eating whole grain parmesan crackers (homemade by Costco) with pepper meunster on top. NOW I realize it's the HEAT I've been missin'... I'm gonna go melt one now. Thanks!

Mmmmmm
The Muenster melts fast and the peppers are jalapenos.

How weird. I had to have a cheese sandwich for lunch yesterday too. And a griled one at that. I decided not to allude tho that 'episode' though, it actually still really upsets me. How daft is that.

tomatoes bliped and dinked... that makes it an original, no doubt!

Now I'm going to have to go out and buy some bread because suddenly a cheese sandwich is sounding awfully good.

Jeeze Louise, You had an extra hour to sleep. You do not have to hide anymore because I have given all the Habaneros away. I bought some fancy cured olives. Oboy!

I recently made grilled cheese sandwiches as well (with ham). Something in the air, it seems. Brush the bread with butter, slow toast in cast iron, put on melty cheese, mmm. The bread was nice and toasty, the ham was thin.

Morgan: Yes, just even toast, hold the cheese, can cheer up a body. I went a whole year on toasted sourdough, served with canned clam chowder, eaten in bed. (Rough year.)

Tammy: No cheese in the house! Still, major brownie points for the celery root soup.

Zoomie: Memories of home -- Kraft American cheese slices melted inside puffy Wonder Bread. Comforting.

Claudia: I had to do something there, pull up out of the poetic tailspin that a cheese sandwich post can be!
(When a Whole Foods opens in your town, they think they've got a ripe demographic. You might be on a culinary upswing.)

KT: Good, double heat whammy.

Sam: I was going to link to the episode in my post, because some readers here probably don't know about it... but I decided to keep our pain private. :D

Stacie: Think I should write a cookbook?

Dagny: We had all the cheese we wanted; it was the bread we had to go buy, too.

Chilebrown: Oh, we had plans. We had plans. Then we rolled over in the bed this morning and said, "we gots too much food in this house already." Sorry we missed you.

Derrick: I'll do ham next time! Amazing how that butter-in-the-pan treatment turns the bread so soft and crisp, not an oxymoron.

Mmmm, glad to read that you improved considerably on the ingredients this time around! In our house, it was always Swiss cheese on Pepperidge Farm white bread. PFarm was better back then, before they sold out to Campbell's soup...

Funny: I did cheese with ham, too -- thin-thin slices of ham with some mild (ie not authentic) provolone. Did the two slices of adorned bread in the toaster oven and slapped them together. Different from my usually buttery grilled version, but it was just the ticket. Maybe the clock has something to do with it!

ooh Cookie, how very Irish, "taking to your bed", pity about the bad year though :(

we've been picnicing on cheese and crackers (saltines!) this weekend. Your sandwich looks much better though (as did Sam's).

have you tried the sliced white bread from Ferrari? It's the best cheese sandwich bread on the planet (and the best toast).

Zoomie: Oh, well. There was Pepperidge Farm once in a while... for company! My dad was the grilled cheese sandwich chef. No, I recall my mom making them on school days, too. (I was allowed to ride home on my bike for lunch.)

Kudzu: Aren't we a funny lot?

Morgan: Aw, thanks for the sympathy. Supper in bed is either 1) quite restorative, or 2) the only thing you can do some times.
PS: 1/8th Irish.

Catherine: It's cheese time, wouldn't you say?
And thanks for the tip on the bread; new to me. Oh boy.

I add some marmite on top of the cheese before I grill it...delicious!

Guiness cheddar from my local deli on plain white with sweet chilli sauce, toasted in the george foreman - OMG!

Beccy: D'oh! I shoulda thought of that. I guess I was craving basic, fundamental. But what's wrong with jazzing it up?

RoganJosh: Like you!! Jazz it up with sweet chilli sauce! OMG. Next time.
(You Brits seem to know how to embellish the grilled cheese sandwich; I stand humbled.)
BTW, Guinness cheddar! {scream} I, however, have Guinness Marmite {scream} !!
