The End of Mayonnaise Season

October. Such a fickle month. One day hot, the next day cool and breezy. Pumpkin weather, I always call it. A little bit of summer left in the air, but the dry leaves are blowing across the patio.
Magnificently, some tomatoes are still ripening on the vines. Lovely bacon is always to be had from Prather Ranch. There's bread, of course, and nice, crisp lettuce.
Since the horrendous fires in Southern California, we learned that the avocado crop had been harmed. And yet, today avocados were on sale at our local market. We stocked up.
So, for probably the last meal of Mayonnaise Season, we had BLATs. Bacon, lettuce, avocado and tomato sandwiches.
With mayonnaise.

I LOVE Prather Ranch bacon. And I simply cannot eat a BLT without avocado.

Yum. Avacados are on sale here too. Just wrote them on my shopping list. I wonder who decides what should be on sale?

I just bought some avocados on Wednesday night when I stopped at Berkeley Bowl. I like to buy them there because they sort them by place of origin -- and price them accordingly. There were no California avocados this trip so I made due with the ones from Mexico.

All local? Ya know, I think you actually perfected the BLT by making it a BLAT! I gotta say A is the perfect addition to the trio.

It's building up to mayo season down my way, first dish was last night, a lovely mustardy potato salad.

It's ALWAYS mayonnaise season at my house! I just had the very, very last red tomato from my plants and am considering what to do (besides frying) with some big green beauties. Maybe a relish or marmalade. It has been a fine run.

I want that sandwich...now, please. Hand it over!
My optimistic self says there are avocados somewhere all of the time...

Claudia: Complication is fussy. We know what we like. Simple, pure. Kickass.

Kalyn: I don't know who decides they should be on sale, but if you read Dagny's comment, you'll see that maybe they're flooding in from Mexico. Eep.

Dagny: I must admit avocados are one non-local item I do enjoy often, but it hadn't occurred to me that they may be from Mexico... or beyond. Snrf.

Lannae: Not all local. Even the wheat flour in the (locally made) bread is not local. And hoo-boy, the Best Foods mayo is... who knows? Martian?

Peter: Not homemade. And please, no mayo lecture!! LOL!!!
:D

Zoomie: Aha! I know what to serve you for lunch on the patio.

Morgan: Oh, all righty then. You're there. Mustardy potato salad. You're there.

Chris: Tomatoes are *thisclose* to ended. Just in time, eh?

Kudzu: We had good success with roasted green tomatoes. Probably gonna make a green tomato pie with ricotta next. Life is pretty damn OK.

Katie: Aren't there avocados everywhere all the time, even in zee Frawnce? Aw, poor you. Come on over.

I prefer BATS myself, you probably already knew that since I was serving them up last weekend. Why spoil a good sandwich with lettuce I say?

(I actually do love lettuce sandwiches - but they are just a different thing for me)

See I am a fussy eater

Actually a lot of the avocados in stores currently are from Chile. The last time one of the major chains had them on sale, it was the Chilean ones. I passed because I didn't like the taste of it when I bought some accidentally a couple of months ago.

isn't everyday a mayo day?

Moonbear said...

I agree with Staci
Every day is mayo day. Tell Cranky that just like daylight savings has been extended, Mayonnaise season has been extended. No end of season. No.

Sam: Oh, that was a delicious sarnie, thank you very much. Didn't need the lettuce.

Dagny: Aarghh! Avocados may well be the only food from the southern hemisphere that makes its way into my kitchen. We don't even buy bananas anymore. Wow, you are an avocado-smart cookie!

Stacie: To tell the truth, mayo will definitely make an appearance again the day after Thanksgiving, for turkey sandwiches (with lettuce, Sam).

Moonbear: Thanks, George. Extending Daylight Savings really makes a huge difference in our economy. Twit. Why don't we just declare permanent Daylight Savings Time?
Oh, excuse me, where were we? Yes. Mayo.
:D
