I Am the Turkey, Goo Goo G' Joob

I'm taking a picture of everything I eat this week, on Sam's urging over at Becks & Posh. It's only Day 2, and I'm already embarrassing myself.
No, not with a meal of gummy bears and wine, as I threatened Sam I'd probably end up doing (and I may still).
In fact, I think just knowing I would be chronicling every morsel has made my diet a bit healthier. I'm being sure to have a bite for breakfast, even if it's only a few spoonfuls of yogurt while I lie in bed with the sudoku puzzle.
I'm also scheduling the main meal for midday, partly because the light is better for photography, and partly because it's nice to have a simple supper without all the fuss.
So I made a big pot of soup for suppers this week.
And therein lies the embarrassment. It's turkey soup.
Leftover turkey, from last year. Made with leftover turkey broth.
We were doing a little freezer-spelunking (which makes sense, because after Thanksgiving, we'll no doubt be cramming the freezer with more leftovers, and we'll need the space). I won't go into details, but there were the basic ingredients for an easy, nourishing soup. Add some barley and fresh vegetables, and voilà.
We Are Eating Thanksgiving Leftovers Right Before Thanksgiving.
Go ahead. Laugh.
Today Cranky picked up the heirloom turkey we'll be roasting on Thursday. It was kinda expensive, as it turns out.
"No problem," I said to Cranky. "It'll last a whole year."

now i am laughing.

our landlord got us a new fridge freezer a month or two ago so all the embarassing stuff in my freezer is gone from when I cleared out the old one. Apart from the tofutti fudge pop I consumed yesterday which is quite embarassing. I am trying to eat them all up so they are all gone and i don't have to eat them any more!

Ha ha ha ha! I'm laughing at you...but only because "misery" loves company. I still have lots of turkey broth left over from last year too. Maybe I'll mix last years and this years and no one will know! Last year's or not, I'm sure it was delicious!

I think your timing is perfect. Now you'll have room for your new turkey leftovers. And you didn't want to be making that soup in the summer did you?

I do love barley in soup. And there's no way in hell that I'd show everything I'm eating, and I think my diet is pretty healthy overall, (just a bit weird at times.)

Sam: That's like smoking up the whole pack so you can quit smoking. Go!
(I seem to remember you had an entire turkey in your freezer! But you scuttled it.)

Michelle: It was delicious. OK, two things -- one of the tubs of leftover turkey broth is going into this year's turkey gravy, so that's a boon. And -- sigh -- I may as well confess that another component of the turkey soup was a container of corned-beef stewing water. That would be from St. Patrick's Day. Salty, but yum.

Kalyn: I do believe I've held the concept of your turkey barley soup in my brain for a whole year, and that's how this happened. Well, no, not that I'm blaming you for my tardiness... But yeah! Didn't want to do it in the summer. Thanks.

I love the Beatles reference! Your blog is always so fun, and definitely a refreshing way for be to get back into food blogs!

(And no need to be ashamed of gummy bears and wine, they go quite well together, especially mead and gummy bears. Yum... Sweet.)

OH dear. You're killin' me. I put Sgt. Pepper on the turntable last night and was wanting to fit that in some how at MH. Dang.

Okay, I'll have to dig out another album. Maybe something from Judy Collins ...

I'm waiting to see the gummi bears and wine. Maybe I'll make turkey broth this year. Because it would end up staying in my freezer for a year or so. Actually I did think of it last year. Took me six months to give up on that idea and to get rid of the bones.

OK, I'll rise to the challenge. Gummy bears and wine, maybe instead of turkey soup for supper. :-P

Biggles: No, Procul Harem.

Non? Howabout some Leadbelly?

Biggles: I think we can agree on that.

1. There is definitely something admirable about year-old turkey broth. I have none only because I had to toss some questionable stuff AFTER I moved it from one house to another and the freezer malfunctioned. Otherwise, I would have it to use today or tomorrow. Good going, Cooks.

2. Cookiecrumb and Biggles: How about Fats Domino?

Kudzu: The turkey broth (stock, actually -- rich and bone-y) survived surprisingly well! And as of tonight, there will be replacements. Heh.
Fats is good.
What about Booker T?
