At this hour, rescue crews have redefined their efforts in finding a Mill Valley man buried by a mudslide from "rescue" to "recovery."
That means they don't think he could have survived this long. It's been over 12 hours.
The guy went out into his back yard in the middle of the night to attempt some water diversion; it's clear he suspected the hillside might not hold.
I Googled his address. The house was 500 feet from the place Cranky and I sold 13 months ago.
That's how close we can be to disaster.
That's how rainy it's been around here.

Good lord, that's horrible. I wish I could send you some of our weather. It's windy and cold here now, but at least it's not raining.
I feel like I should be outside planting honorary tomato plants for you or something.
Woke up in Mill Valley very early this morning, wondering whether I was in Nam (or MASH), with helicopters overhead, circling the town. Of course they were news choppers. Turned on the telly and discovered the story about the mudslide.
I wasn't as close as 500 feet, but I moved in October from that part of town where I perched at the top of a hill for many years. Now I am safe and sound in a more reasonable place: no front-on view of the mountain, but less to worry about.
I can really identify with your post and how vulnerable we feel right now.
That is truly frightening.
Holy cow. I'm so glad that wasn't you or Cranky.
I guess I'll quit bitching about the snow. It won't kill me. Be safe.
I saw on the news last night that all of the neighboring houses have been yellow tagged. Thank goodness you are not still there.
When we sold our 60-year-old Mill Valley house, it was at that point of needing more money thrown into it than we could manage.
A young couple bought it, and they haven't done any major improvements yet. I don't even want to think about the super-steep, crumbling driveway.
On the up side: There's a little sun out right now.
But storm's a'comin'.
I grilled lamb steaks & Fatted Calf breakfast sausage over mesquite & hickory last night. In my shorts. Outside, wearing a t shirt. I was smiling.
