I'm Cool With That

Doesn't that look good? Toasted pasta, golden brown and yet still slippery in the mouth. Deeply infused rice, fragrant with chicken and herbs.
Naturally, it's a pilaf.
But it came from a box labeled Rice-A-Roni.
Seriously. Laugh me out of blogdom now.
The weather here has not been cooperating lately. During a particularly wet sludge through what I thought was supposed to be summer, I collapsed into my needy, sickbed ways. Almost.
When I'm really sick, I like a can of chicken and noodle soup.
This time, though, I felt hearty enough for not-soup. But it still needed to be noodley, chickeny, kinda MSG-y.
Oh, just kill me now. I haven't had Rice-A-Roni in decades. I knew, though, it was the remedy, the elixir. Just this once.
Cranky dashed down to the market and grabbed a couple of boxes. He also bought the makings of a chicken sandwich for himself.
I cooked the Roni while he assembled his own lunch. He kept offering me bits of chicken, but NO, it needs to be pure, in situ, as is.
He ate, and I ate. Finally, he accepted a nibble of my pilaf, and he (secretly) liked it. A lot.
I know this, because the very next day he heated up the leftover Roni and shared a plate of it with me.
And now he is out there, buying more boxes of the stuff.

Hope you're feeling better now. I'm embarrassed to admit I have never tasted Rice-a-roni. Gonna have to helly on down to the local store and widen my horizons.

I make home made rice-a-roni all the time. You buy orzo pasta and follow the directions that would be on the box. Add your own spices. In a pinch I have chopped up spaghetti noodles.

Oh boy - you two are outed! Turn in that Gromet ribbon. Rice-a-Roni. LOL! But hey, whatever gets you through the day. But today is simply gorgeous so you should be recovering?

Zoomie: You're not supposed to be embarrassed. I am.
But good. :)

Chilebrown: We were thisclose to making it homemade. I've done pilaf dozens of times. But I just needed that commercial zing in my mouth. I'll try your way next time. Orzo is king.

Nancy: Oh, I am well recovered as of beautiful today. Our lunch will be a glorious upcoming post. Don't you love it that Zoomie wants to try the Roni? That's being open-minded, and she might even be pleased.

I have to admit eating in the long ago, and (honest) I didn't even know they made it nowadays. I can understand the need for that type of thing, though, oh so easily. Today I had a deviled ham sandwich, from that little can. It wasn't quite right, though, because I didn't have white bread (we called it loaf bread), only healthful whole wheat. Still. All I needed was the fake "orange drink" -- not juice, not soda, somewhere in between -- of the Forties.

Kudzu: The Rice-A-Roni cooks in real time... Raw pasta, raw rice. Except for the flavor packet, you might even be making real food.
Oh, deviled ham. I fell in love with it when Cranky's mom served me a sandwich (on loaf bread) while we were dallying on the dad's boat on Buzzards Bay. We always have a few cans in the pantry.

Aye, Cooks -- it's that flavor packet (complete with your yearned-for MSG) that makes the dish. I've eaten it before -- and I've even cooked it before. Just not in a long, long time. PS I'm glad they haven't changed the wrapper and label on the deviled ham can!

Kudzu: Isn't that pleated paper wrapper the BOMB? I still love it and sometimes try not to rip it. Sigh.
So, was it Fanta? Nehi? :)

Have never had the stuff, but I trust you and will keep that in mind for special occasions (emergencies ;-)

hey, I love Velveeta and I am a food blogger.

cookiecrumb said...

Mouse: Oh, I am quite OK. It was more of a mental health thing. How's your miserable Italian flu? And with you cooking for all the sailors!

Bewitch: Keeping in mind "special" = "emergency." It's just for fun.

I still remember the commercial ditty: "Rice-A-Roni, the San Francisco treat!"

cookiecrumb said...

Lynnie: Yeah! And remember the dingdingding of the cable car bell?

kudzu said...

Cookie: that orange drink came in a carton from a dairy. Honest. It wasn't fizzy at all. And it wasn't Tang! I have a feeling it was watered down, sugared up orange juice.

Kudzu: Probably unforgettable. Well, yeah. Unforgettable. XX

We too like the Rice-A-Roni brand rice pilaf, on sale many times 10 for $10 at our local grocery store. But, we make it with home churned butter and local water from the tap that we filter. So, it still fits into our life style of cooking with at least 1 local ingredient in every meal. Is this an "eating locally" stretch? Nah, it is not a stretch, I mean, HOME CHURNED butter from cream from the a local free range cow. Yeah, that little street car box is certainly a pleasure.

Lannae: That is admirable craziness of just the sort I would do, but you outdid me. Yippee, girlfriend. And thanks for the reinforcement.

Greg said...

It looks great. I never had it but it is after all the San Francisco Treat!;)

cookiecrumb said...

Greg: I can actually recommend it. But not if you're all puritan, local, etc. Heck, Golden Grain owns Rice-A-Roni now, and they're based in Chicago! :)

I passed the flu on to one of the sailors, and they don't make me cook every night :)

cookiecrumb said...

Mouse: Yeah, I heard about the fast-disappearing spagbol. I think youre having fun!

I just want you to know, Cookie, that I don't think any less of you for your Roni indulgence. Not even a little. Really. Honest. (Hope the ironic-affectionate-bullying sense of humor peculiar to my family survives translation from voice to text.) Also hope you're feeling better.

I'm singed, Kate, just singed. ;)
BTW I wasn't really sick so much as horribly depressed by the weather.

I've had this sort of feeling and soothed myself with Kraft macaroni and cheese...the type with the squishy foil packet of cheese versus the powder pack. Sometimes we crave the unexpected...

cookiecrumb said...

Denise: Oh, *that* packet! Just the other day I wondered if I should do a post on packets. Mac n cheese, ramen, rice a Roni, brownies... What else?

Aunt Jemima Coffee Cake...

cookiecrumb said...

Denise: Oh, good lord, I didn't know about that one. It's been too long since I shopped in a grocery store. :)

Childhood memories... They sure don't sell it at my beloved Real Food Co (no Kraft mac either). I don't know where one would find this cake in a box. Maybe Safeway...
