What is it with sandwiches all of a sudden? I do not follow food fads (oh, maybe I do), but at just the moment I realized I like sandwiches, the world seemed to erupt with sandwich stories. And sandwiches, of course.
Or maybe I only noticed the sandwich commotion around me because I was suddenly into it, even if it had been there all along.
I recently discovered the pleasure of just happening to have sliced provolone cheese in the fridge; a need might pop up.
And sliced ham. A need will pop up.
I will admit that in this case, the rye bread with caraway seeds had to be procured.
But there was homemade mustard in the fridge.
Do the non-Euclidean geometry, people!
Ham and cheese sammie. Because sometimes you don't want to braise.

"A Square Meal." Oh, yes. And thanks for the shoutout.
Zoomie: Hee! Yes, shoutouts for you alla time.
Maybe sandwiches are now the food equivalent of the "little black dress?" I had a sandwich for dinner tonight as well - oatmeal bread spread with a think layer of Irish butter and lovely slices of last night's chicken. A salad of butter lettuce, radishes and endive on the side. A square meal indeed!
Nancy: That sounds so really, really good. Also, by square, and I think Zoomie got it, adorably retro. Would Maynard G. Krebs eat this?
"sammiches" are comfort food...ham and cheese and mustard in the fridge are basic survival items. If I go tomorrow...let me go with mustard ploped on the front of my t-shirt and breadcrumbs all over the keyboard...
Sandwiches are hot!
Actually, I was chuckling at "square" describing the shape of most sandwich meals - as well as the reference to a satisfying meal. Shoulda known you'd add yet another layer to the meaning. Not square, kiddo, real, real cooooool, man.
Simply: It IS nice to sink into a soft sandwich. My biggest disagreement with them has been "too much bread," but that is easily fixed.
And I guess I'm already gonna go, because: mustard plops and keyboard crumbs. :D
Greg: Unless they're cold, and that's good too.
Zoomie: Were you a beatnik?
No, I was too young. But I did watch Dobie Gillis a few times, so I dig the lingo, man.
Zoom: You hep cat.
I love sandwiches. And you can't go wrong with a classic like ham n cheese.
Cooks -- You're no L7 !
Kudzu: L7 !!! Love that. I'm gonna go give my bongos a consciousness-raising now.
Hungry Dog: I musta forgot I like sandwiches! Maybe I thought they were lowbrow, but I'm really not like that, really. :D
