A Sort of Wind in the Willows Meal

Yesterday it was storming something awful. Rain, huge winds, and lightning. Cold and nasty.
It might have been a good day for a lentil stew or a potato potage, but we needed lunch, now.
Besides, we've been planning on having Welsh Rarebit. Had the good cheese in the fridge.
OK, it was a slap-dash job. The egg wasn't beaten well enough, and not blended into the cheese-and-ale mix well enough. So what? It tasted perfect. Really, really filling, too.
Ms. Mole and Mr. Toad needed a nap.

Our Cal neighbor is inconsolable today.

"What's inside it?" asked the Mole, wriggling with curiosity.

"There's cold chicken inside it," replied the Rat briefly: "coldtonguecoldhamcoldbeef pickledgherkinssaladfrenchrollscresssandwiches pottedmeatgingerbeerlemonadesodawater — "

"O stop, stop!" cried the Mole in ecstasies. "This is too much!"

"Do you really think so?" enquired the Rat seriously. "It's only what I always take on these little excursions; and the other animals are always telling me that I 'm a mean beast and cut it very fine!"

Zoomie: Get over it! It's a GAME. The BIG game, granted.
We got the axe! We got the axe!

Elizabeth: O stop, stop! This is too much!
What a beautiful contribution to this lowly blog. And jeez, my cheesy toast was nothing like Rat's hamper.

He would say, "Oh, yeah? Well, just wait until next year!"

The Wind in the Willows - still one of my favorite books. You've inspired me to make my own version of Rat's sandwich because I have some tongue in the fridge, gherkins, lettuce (no watercress) and some ginger ale. See how you inspire us!

Re Cal losing - my Classics professor is a huge Cal fan and I e-mailed him some Greek curses to try out on Stanford. Obviously they didn't work - maybe we need a few burnt haunches of goat!

I LOVE a proper cheesey toastie - it's the perfect thing for a cold & crapulent day.
And I Soooooooo want to go on a picnic with ratty and mole (did I ever tell you I used to work with a Mr Mole, he was such a lovely chap).

Ha. "I don't give a rat's hamper" ?

All these, including the rarebit, sound delightful, Ms. Mole.

Zoomie: And that's exactly the way it goes. From year to year. :)

Nancy: You have tongue in the fridge? Round of awestruck applause, everybody.

Mouse: The only Mole I know is Adrian. Know him?
(Ooh, picnic with mole and ratty. Me come too.)

Greg: You are very funny. It is an illness, you understand, this punning. Keep it up.

Kudzu: That's it! "rat's hamper"
The new way to say it.
(Today we're back to clay pot cookery with tofu.)

Sorry, I'm still stuck on the egg. What egg? None of the recipes I see call for it, and yours looks good, nice and solid.

Cheryl: It's from the Joy of Cooking. Not yer gastronomical high end, but a nice recipe.

Adrian Mole? You too??

Kudzu: Ha ha! Indeed. I read it in my thatched-roof cottage.
