Pig and Vegetable Sandwich

BLT. IBM. ABC. RCA.
Which triad of initials is most important to you?
You are banned from this blog if your answer wasn't BLT.
Here's the sad thing. This was my first BLT of THE SEASON. And it's probably my last.
It's September. Labor Day.
I am only Just Now pulling in a couple of beautiful Brandywine tomatoes from the anemic garden. Darn anemic garden.
And I wasn't particularly proud of the bacon; purchased, salty, smoky. I'd rather make my own, and this experience reminds me that I must. It's easy.
Still! However!
BLT.
Not Fall yet.

it is truly sad to be having summer's first BLT *sigh*...

Greg: Just not sure I'll get enough this year.

I had a BLT for lunch on Saturday, it's a regular dinner at our place too (though often a BLAT).
I've got the instructions for making my own bacon and finally found some good real (as in not just bread) free range pork belly. I't next on the list, after the ricotta experiment!

I'm also hanging out for REAL tomato season, mmmmmmmm!

Hey, Cookie, you must not let the summer go without at least three BLTs - it is written! Like you, I was holding out for the perfect ingredients and they only showed up a couple of weeks ago but I'm not above purchasing beautiful tomatoes from places more blessed with good weather than we have been this year. We also need at least one perfect open-faced avocado and tomato sandwich on wheatberry toast, spritzed with lemon juice and black pepper. Without that, it simply hasn't been summer at all.

Ruth: It's sad! Thanks for the sympathy. Baby. Baby Ruth. : )

Mouse: We Yanks tend to think of BLTs as very American, so I'm titillated to know you eat them too. And BLATs! The best.
Hey, if you make your own bacon and ricotta, you will be One Up on me.

Zoomie: I think I can force feed myself a couple more. The tomatoes are ripening. I'm not avoiding wheat bread anymore (eee). We got two weeks of summer left, and I'm doing it in mayonnaise.

I don't have the ability to smoke my own bacon; my tiny apartment just isn't up to it and I can't grow my own tomatoes either. But the Farmer's Market has great tomatoes and the local small grocery store has fantastic bacon. What I DO do though is make my own mayonnaise with good olive oil and eggs from a local farm, range
fed and uncaged. The eggs are a delight by themselves but to have them folded into home made mayo and to have that on a BLT with sourdough bread is a truly divine experience.

Nancy: I've always pooh-poohed the mayonnaise makers. Best Foods is fine for me.
UNTIL! I had a taste of this latest jar, and it was very industrial, very corporate, no no.
So yeah, I guess I'll be making my own from now on.

You are so right about Best Food's change in taste. I have used it for "regular" occasions and as I'm not a big mayo eater, each jar lasted a long time. But the last jar I got tasted weird - too sweet maybe? I tried the Best Foods made with Canola (gag) and Olive Oil (gag gag gag). I've now switched to Hellman's which I buy at the local Walgreens. Can you imagine buying food at a drug store? But, so far, I really like Hellman's and I noticed that they don't add all the sugar that other mayo manufactures do. We are all so concerned about fat but it's the sugar and salt in processed food that's even more dangerous. Or equally dangerous. Anyway, I don't eat much processed food but you know what I mean.

Nancy: DOINK! I thought Hellmans and Best Foods were the exact same product, east and west of the Missouri. Or Mississippi.
So, I will give Hellmans a try (we got a Walgreens) and then I will become a purist. Hateful, odious purist. : )

You should of given me a call. Oh boy do I have bacon.

Nancy and Cookiecrumb, if your last taste of Best Foods was the upside down squeeze bottle, that may be the problem. I tried that for the convenience and it was molto dreadful! Went back to the jars and it's good again.

Chilebrown: Oh, how nice of you! I do think of you all the time. And Mojo. I hope that's not rubbing a scab.
Want to see you again.

Zoomie: For me, it was not squeeze mayo. Just horrifying, and it makes me wonder if my supertaster taste buds are acting up. Which is good, but not good.

Chilebrown: You have GOT to tell me where you live. I'll be sleeping in your front yard. With Oscar.
