Pearfume

The other day I was babbling in a comments thread here about why someone doesn't make a pear perfume.
My pears are nearly full-grown, and getting closer to ripeness every day. The premature ones that came off the tree, either because we had to saw a limb down or because the pears that get internal bug infestations tend to take their own lives and jump off, those all seem to be ripening and we've already eaten quite a few of them.
So, I was dreaming of a personal scent that combines all the summery, wispy, ethereal notes of true, ripe pear.
God that would be good.
A commenter said there was already a pear scent, but I Googled it, and it's a home deodorizer.
I didn't come up with any other pear perfumes in my search. (Note to self: the key word is "fragrance," not "perfume.")
But it so happened I needed to shop at a beauty stephora today (I'm being cryptic!), and asked the black-clad, outrageous false eyelash-decorated sales staff if there was a pear scent.
No. Sadly.
But they walked me over to the fruity scents and left me alone to browse and squirt.
Darned if I didn't come across a huge bottle of Marc Jacobs Pear.
It's not pure summer Bartlett (aka William in Europe). Not as sweet as fruit can be. But hoo, yeah, I bought some.
It's faint, subtle, herbal... and peary. (And wait! I don't want to smell sweet.)
I'll probably use up the whole bottle before fall.
I wish I was as hopeful about using up the pears themselves.

What fun to find that Marc Jacobs had the same idea! I wonder if he has a pear tree in his yard? Or fond pear memories?

Sounds delish, won't there be a danger that someone may saunter on up and give you a nibble? (not that that's always a bad thing).

I didn't think about mentioning it the other day, but canned pears are delish the whole year round. My parents had two enormous pear trees and we'd can the bounty every year.

I swear though, you keep talking about them and I'm going to drive up there and steal all your pears in the middle of the night!

Watch out for those yellowjackets!!

Can't wait to smell that scent. I am still trying to find true freesia. Such distinct fragrances are hard to reproduce.

When I was a kid, my parents had a pear tree that prduced the hardest pears known to man. Even after they dropped, they were like rocks. It doesn't produce anything now except leaves.

Bath & Body Works used to have a pear blossom scent. They've changed so much in the past 6 mos, I couldn't tell you if it's been discontinued or not.

The scent is a very thick, heavy pear scent. With tones of other things, but mainly thick, thick pears.

Pear scent, ingenious! I'll recognize you by your fruity smell if I happen to cross paths with you this summer!

Zoomie: I was already crazy about Marc Jacobs's first (eponymous) scent. I guess he and I have a similar sniffology.

Morgan: I'm hoping for nibbles! And I think it's unisex enough that I'm going to squirt some on Cranky.

Sweet Bird: I know. I can't can. I could, but I haven't tried... What a loozah.

Kudzu: No yellowjackets!! Hooyah.
Freesia... isn't that a little pumpkiny?
Incidentally, Marc Jacobs also has a Basil scent!!

Nikki: Har! You have almost successfully frightened me away from Bath and Body Works now. Too thick, eh? But, knowing me, I'll go give it a snort.

Anna: Here's a funny one. I almost sprayed myself with perfume before I went shopping. Whoa. Stopped myself just in time. :)

that sounds amazing! I might have to add some to my next Sephora order.

I used to wear essential oil of pear behind each ear like a proper lady.

Alice: I couldn't believe the number of food scents at *stephora*. They used to carry the Demeter line (which is Crazy foody), but no longer...

Heather: Oh, wow. That's actually improper, the way I like it.

I must look out for this. Sounds amazing.

Pear drops is pretty easy, its benzoyl esters. I dont think I'm allowed to make perfume at work though! :)

Are you going to be having a pear harvest party again? You don't have to do anything this time, just provide the sun the and the pears and the beautiful companionship. We'll bring everything else and take LOTS of pears off your hands.

When I was single I used to dab truffle oil behind each ear in hopes of attracting a man of fine taste. Interestingly, it never worked.

Barbara: It's "adult." You'd love it. I am now resisting the urge to decorate my house in pear-aphernalia.

JennyWenny: What??? I must know more!

SFMike: Cranky and I decided last week we should probably do a repeat. It would be nice. (And we need the help stripping the tree, obviously.)

Heather: Oh, now. See, that probably would have worked on me, but that wasn't the effect you were after, was it?

Impulse shopper, eh? I knew I liked you. I'm guilty of it too. What can I say? I'm a sucker for food-related (and scented) goods.

And cookie, you CAN can! It's really easy! I promise. I don't know why I didn't think of canning your pears before, but sweet bird is sooo right! And they are sooo good! My grandma and my mom did it all the time while I was growing up (and I started canning on my own a few years ago). Plus, it's so fun to "put up" for the winter and taste summer all year long.

Dried pears are pretty darn awesome too. And then you could send me some ;)

Annick Goutal has a perfume made with one of the pear scent molecules. You should try it. It's called "Petite Cherie," and it's really lovely!

Michelle: I know. I SHOULD can. My problem is I'm a real recipe mangler, and I never know if I'll have the right pH.
Anyway. Yes, dried pears.

Alma: I'm on my way to give it the sniff test. Thank you so much.

Haha, I did that with basil scent... I have some basil lotion and was wishing I could find a perfume or essential oil to use as well, then bang, I'm at Sephora and see that Marc Jacobs had the same idea! Love that guy!

Megfood: I love Marc Jacobs too. And I love the smell of basil (though I don't eat it much).
I didn't think his Basil splash smelled true enough. But you know what? You can drive yourself to nirvana by crushing a leaf of real, fresh basil under your chin.
(I would crush real, fresh pears under my chin, but I'd be all sticky.) :P
