The Omnivore's 100

This is fun, and everybody's doing it. Andrew put together a list of 100 foods he thinks any good omnivore should have tried at least once. Andrew is British, so his list doesn't include some things this Yank might believe to be must-tries. Like jellyfish tentacles, which I have tried. Or cheese curd (ditto). Or sea vegetables (of course!). But still, fun.
Several of the foods on this list have been prepared by me in my very own kitchen.

How the Omnivore's 100 works:
1) Copy this list into your blog or journal, including these instructions.

2) Bold all the items you’ve eaten.

3) Cross out any items that you would never consider eating.

4) Optional: Post a comment at
Very Good Taste, linking to your results.

Since I'm only a lurker I can't join in (officially) but I wanted to tell you that curry wurst is a hot dog with curry topping -- I kid you not -- very popular as street food in Germany. And no, I have never et it (nor chitlins).

Anita: Well, see? Shoot. We could have done that Saturday.
But yes. Let's do.

Dagny: How about a date at the Mac?

Kudzu: I will gladly host a blog post for you here, if you ever want me to.
Thanks for the clue about curry wurst. Which is now "no thanks," but... Well, maybe!

Sorry about the double post. But yeah. I haven't been to the Mac in a couple of years. I am way overdue. actually that's where I first had escargots. Now I order them whenever I have a chance. And I had stayed away because I was afraid of the texture thing.

And thank you Kudzu for explaining the curry wurst. That's what I thought it was. There used to be a place in SF that served them.

Well that was fun 58 out of 100 - not bad for a reformed fussy eater.

Aww man...you can't miss out on those snails. They've been a favorite since childhood. But, then again, I can't even get my husband to try them.

My first comment on yours. But not my first peek. Rose harissa -- it's on my list of please-please-pleeeeeze brings from England. Belazu is my brand of choice. And... Currywurst is a fat German Wurst (not an american ballpark) with curry spice (not smothered in curry). Still, unless it's 1a.m. in Berlin and you've been clubbing (um, not since the 80s) ... it wouldn't be on my top 100. Rose harissa - definitely. And Pulpo a la gallega. How did that not make the list?

I see I am going to have to sort out your inexcusable neglect of #37

Thanks to Anonymous. I guess it was all the oniony stuff on top of the ones I saw that turned me around.

Morgan: I should think it's really hard getting over being fussy. Congratulations.

Sweet Bird: So let's me and you and your husband (oh, hell, Cranky too) go for a snail fest! I guess I should try.

Anonymous: I'm so grateful for your comment. It's perfectly clear now.
I totally chickened out on an opportunity to eat polpo a la gallega once. I'm sure I infuriated the chef! (Funny, because I'm OK with octopus on sushi.)

Sam: Oh, yes, please? And I'd be happy to bring you up to par on #30.

Nikki @ NikSnacks said...

OK, I going to do it, too. You're totally awesome in your kitchen...makin' stuff from scratch. You're an inspiration to me :)

cookiecrumb said...

Nikki: Some day I will confess publicly how much I eat canned clam chowder and Rosarita burritos.
But, I really did make lots of those things, so I'm not a total loser.
Can't wait to read your list.

C'mon. Is there anybody who hasn't tried PB&J, at least anybody in the English-speaking world? What's it doing on this list! Meanwhile, I'm surprised you haven't had snake. It tasted like deep-fried anything.

Sam said...

janet - this list was written by a Brit and I am sure not a lot of them have tried this American oddity.

I am sure I wouldn't have, had I not come to live here and been unable to avoid it.

cookiecrumb said...

Janet: I'm not averse to tasting snake, it just hasn't slithered across my path yet.

Sam: Thanks.

I read this list at C&Z, and, well, it doesn't make the grade.

- Tough in Santa Rosa

P.S. Yeah, I'll get off the pot someday and do better.

Oh fun fun fun! I think I might be close. I'll do this post (it'll count toward my 5/week, so what the hell?).

You're admirably adventurous, 'crumb.

cookiecrumb said...

Heather: I can't wait to see your list.
I think I'm a timid eater, but every time I get presented with an opportunity to eat, mebbe, duck testicles, I say "I've GOT to do this!"
OK, I've never been presented with the opportunity to eat duck testicles.

Wow, you are very impressive! However, I wish that the list would have individually distinguished amongst beignets, churros, elephant ears, and funnel cakes. They are all distinct!!

I'm a food lover, like Indian and Chinese food. But never thought of being an omnivore . Keeps me pushing out of the dining.
