You Lose Some, You Win Some

Slim pickin's, folks.
I trashed my entire photo library the other day, by accident. I don't want to talk about it.
I know some images are retrievable from the hard drive but I'm not getting any hints of the whereabouts of the nearly 1,300 pictures that vanished. Only some.
I do, however, still have a very recent photo of a dish I experimented with the other day.
Whew, talk about experimenting. I'd never used puff pastry before. Ever. I didn't know you could (should) roll it out, so it doesn't puff up into a caricature of itself in the oven. Lyle Lovett does dessert.
This was so simple. I lined two small glass dishes with (too much) puff pastry and placed smaller squares of puff pastry for tops on the baking sheet. Cooked it until puffy and brown. Let it cool a bit, then slathered it with homemade applesauce (sprinkled with salt and cinnamon), topped it with the little pieces of puff pastry. Then I laid a couple of thin strips of good cheddar on the mattress-like top crusts, put 'em back in the oven for a good melting, and then: Eat.
Verdict: Chewy and puffy. Needed to have been rolled out, and now I know. But it's a killer quick method.
Elsewhere. I can hardly bear to go near the TV or Internet for news. Too much Hillabama anxiety. Of course, I'm dying to know the outcome of Tuesday's voting. But it's only Monday morning, so I'll just hibernate until then.
Or maybe try tinkering with my hard drive. Darn.

Oh, my God, everyone's worst nightmare: the crash.

Surely we have some technonauts out there in Blogville who can advise you. Otherwise, my son-in-law has an IT company with very gently techies. Good luck with this daunting problem.

Meanwhile, practice your rolling for diversion.

Puff pastry is the only thing I get premade! Instadessert for those instaguests.

Sorry for your photowoes, but what Kudzu said: there has to be a nice person out there!

Sorry to hear this news. I am sure it is frustrating!

Try Tim Atwater, a great geek who works on computers very reasonably and is based in Marin. He has helped MB and me on more than one occasion! Nice guy, only minor geekiness.

but puff pastry does make the world seem like a better place, doesn't it?
Sorry - that your world needs puff pastry right now.

Alton Brown did a very good show all things puff pastry. very useful indeed. I think I took notes somewhere - i should try and dig them out for you.

Oh that is very bad news. Much worse than me erasing a few farmer's market photos from my camera. It also reminds me that I haven't loaded any of my photos into flickr for a very long time. It's one of those jobs I never seem to get done.

oh no! my sympathies! losing photos is the pits. i came back from florence with a corrupted compact flash card and lost most of my photos from that trip so i know how upset you must be. i hope you'll be able to retrieve some of the photos. my best wishes! btw, "...puff up into a caricature of itself in the oven" is a brilliant line.

I feel your pain. Years ago I lost a number of files, mostly photos and some custom-made sound files. It still pains me to think about it. I hope that you fare better than I did.

I hate when that happens. My techie daughter is a wizard if you need help. Oh BTW it is going to be Obama by a nose :)

Sorry about the drive- you have reminded me to plug in the external and copy everything over tomorrow.

Thank you all for your consolations and advice. I'm not seriously grieving the loss of too many pix, except for some puppy shots of Bean Sprout.
I used to upload full-size pictures to Blogger, so I was able to go collect several of my oldies, up to the point in my blog where I changed my uploading habit. I also think I've got a few stashed at Flickr.

So, yeah. Puff pastry heals hearts. :D

And I'm still rooting around for missing pix.

Sorry about the misplacing of photos of Bean Sprout. He is sure cute, and the puppy pictures, I am sure were very cute.

There's a place in Novato that can retrieve things, www.drivesavers.com - it saved me more than once! Complete recovery of all photos and docs. I completely sympathize.

Ah well, yeah. I lost about 3 years worth of Meathenge photos plus personal ones as well. Figured I was safe with my backups, but they were all fried as well. Power surge for me.

CC, I did the same thing just last summer. Purchased some recovery software that got all the stuff back, albeit not in nice, organized files/folder like I used to have them in.

I'd be happy to share... shoot me an email!

A PS: Came back to see how things are going with help from the blog world. See? I told you!
Also -- looking at those pastries again is driving me to go to my freezer and take out some Pepperidge Farm peach turnovers. Honest. That flavor is hard to find, and one of my faves. And it is easier, if not as therapeutic, as making one's own. Especially on deadline days.

set to hunker down with my boyfriend Anderson (yuck!) and watch the outcome tonight. Who knew a primary in March could matter! IL just moved from first tues in March to stoopertuesday this year, and for what?

That snack sounds like something by boys would pounce on! Mmmmmmm...puff pastry!

I had my hard drive crash a few months ago and lost everything. Tons of photos. Of my kids. I felt like an idiot. Now I have a cute little external hard drive sitting right behind my computer (a Mac), always hooked up, and the Mac automatically backs everything up every minute. It's sweet. And I have absolutely no worries now. Get thee an external HD. They're small and cheap.

I am in the process of trying to sort the 20+ folders of photos (sorted by date) into fewer folders, sorted by subject.

Your puffy goodness looks wonderful. I love apple turnovers with cheddar, and you found a perfect lazy woman way to make it!

Fun fact about puff pastry: if you don't make clean cuts in it to get through all those layers of fat and dough, it will look a bit like the Elephant Man when you bake it. Could be a plus or a minus, depending on how you look at it.

I really love making a nice brie en croute with puff pastry, brown sugar and pecans, especially when I lose a bunch of photos. Cheese takes the pain away.

TheItalianDish: Awesome new blog on cooking Italianly. I recommend it. Thanks for swinging by! (Also: Awesome advice; I'm taking it.)

Sam: Nothing yet, but lots of lovely condolences and hints from readers. I'm having a Mac geek over on Sunday for entirely unrelated reasons, and he might give it a look-see.

I was actually wondering about your election opinions. Remiss of me to not to wonder about your lost photos. But I have a good feeling about those.

Sam: Oh, you're funny. Cranky asked me to guess the outcome on Tuesday's voting, and I got all four states right. What a mess the Democratic party is in; I hope it doesn't self-destruct.
