OK. This is what I saw at the market this morning (in addition to stunning arrays of persimmons, squash, carrots — a lotta orange stuff, almost blinding in the harsh autumn sun).
It's heartening to know the farmers will bring their produce the day before Thanksgiving, and I bet the market will be busy.
But. "Thursday farmers market is on Wednesday"? That makes it a Wednesday Thursday market.
Sign-making is such a charming art. It's almost like there's a rule food signs have to be a little naive, a little goofy.
I will spare you a photo of the sign I spotted outside a local restaurant, offering "potato-leak soup." I did take a picture, but I didn't take a leak.

can we go there before our 'other' adventure for the day?
How Wunnnerful you will be able to have some fresh goodies for your spread Thursday! (of course I assume you are making at least one little thing on the great national pig-out)
(And you envy my cranberries? I envy your (access to) persimmons, but pear chutney sounds fabulous, frankly.)
potato-leak, teeheheheheehe, I didn't know potatoes could leak.
I'm pretty excited about cranberries; I even felt OK passing over the persimmons today in favor of them.
potato leak, heeheee :)
Almost as good as "yellow haricot verts"
My sister is on the hunt for local (to her) cranberries, and she's gonna fly them out here. Does that count? :) (I personally loathe cranberry relish, but there will be mutiny if it's missing. Oh, well... the goal is "90% local" anyway.)
The sign made my head hurt -- a little. But potato-leak? Classic.
Hey, I was at that market and didn't even notice the sign! (ten minutes only, with my mom on the way to dropping her off at the airport, she can't live without Full Belly Farms). I looked for you guys, but no go.
Sam: Yes, I was thinking exactly the same thing (although I already picked up your whole wheat flour). Come as early as you like.
El: I'm a guest this year, but yes, I will make at least one little thing to bring (in addition to the pear chutney).
Oh, right. I have gifted local persimmons, too.
Morgan: Yow, that's creepy.
Peter: I'm so-so on cranberries, but I do have a drop-dead simple oven preparation (berries and sugar, no liquid, in a covered cast-iron skillet; roast for 45 minutes or so -- you'll know when they're done; add a splash of brandy if you like).
Anita: Eeee. I think it's cool your sister is bringing local crans. You just put a dab on your plate and smear them with gravy now and then; you don't have to eat them.
Dagny: Yeah, I should photo more of these boo-boos.
Tea: We were there at 10. I never expect to see people I know on a Thursday, so I didn't look for you. Oh well. :(
One of my favorite signs was in a fishmonger's on Bleecker Steet in West Village, owned by Italians. Above the baskets filled with mussels and other critters there was a hand-lettered carboard reading: SMLETS.
So you're back here now. I come home from holiday and looked at the other blog and it's gone. Seems to me you and Sam are planning some special outing for Chris' visit.
Kudzu: LOL hilarious. I would always remember that, as have you.
OK, now I have a new quest, thanks to y'all.
Barbara: I'm Mad and I Eat. And sometimes "mad" means angry and sometimes it means crazy.
So glad you're back on terra firma. I was going to send a search squad.
I wrote a post once called "Leak Soup" about a series of leaks to the press, and it was Googled constantly by spelling impaired Googlers. I finally wrote about real leek soup and posted a link in the original post.
LOL! Funny! Nothing to do with food, but I saw this sign:
Matt Lawyer, D.D.S. ha ha ha!
hee hee! at valentine's day, a local eatery had a sign out that said "serf and turf"... this made me giggle, picturing a indentured servant bringing me a steak...
Someday, when I'm independently wealthy with unlimited means, I'm going to rome (sic) the world with a red magic marker, correcting menus and other signs.
Hopefully, I'll get back to Budaest...I had some duck in rancid fat there....
This sounds like an exciting little adventure you are planning!!
KathyF: Gosh, you can't even do a play on words without attracting the dopes. That was funny.
Lannae: He went to the wrong graduate school! Ha.
Stacie: We should all be collecting these. Funny.
Katie: Speaking of correcting errors with a red marker, I twitch a little when I see boo-boos on blogs. Oh, I see 'em. Twitch.
ChrisB: I'm not sure if I'm supposed to keep it a secret or what! It'll be loads of fun, I'm convinced.
