Isn't That Nice?

I'm almost ashamed to show you this picture, because actually it isn't that Nice. As in Niçoise.
It's a gringo attempt at a pan bagnat. We had all the right ingredients (give or take), but we didn't drizzle them with enough dressing. We weighted the sandwiches down with a plate topped with the Joy of Cooking, but maybe we didn't wait long enough weighting.
We never reached garlicky wet oiliness. We failed to achieve "bathed bread."
Ah, well, it was darn tasty. Close approximation, given our non-Frenchitude.
I'm too old to sunbathe topless, anyway.
No Orangina, either.

It looks tasty. Send some over I'll happily eat it. I've always removed a little of the crumb before layering the ingredients.

Maybe you should have used Larousse Gastronomique instead of Joy of Cooking!

Bet it tasted fine and remember, we learn by doing.

No Orangina?!?!?!
Oh, poor you....

Tana: I know. Ewww! The sad thing is, it's most of the rest of me that's off-limits for sunbathing. The "topless" part is still pretty boinky. OK. TMI.

Mouse: Yes, tres. xx. Good Italian tuna.

Barbara: Can't go far wrong. I should have scooped out a little bread, but it was a flat ciabatta so I didn't... Still good.

Catherine: Blush!!

Kudzu: There was a leftover half sandwich, and it did improve in the fridge.
We do learn. We hope we learn.

Katie: Ha. Ça alors! ;-)

Looks delish! I'll have to keep that in mind for next weekend - looks like a great Sunday late-lunch-so-we-don't-need-dinner sandwich!

well, it sure LOOKS good anyways even if it wasn't authentic.

too old to sunbathe topless? Tell that to some of the French women! lol

You know, I don't think that I've EVER had the patience to wait for everything to meld into sandwichy-dressing-drenched goodness.

Viva the earlybird!

Stacie: Aw, it was just a sandwich! *thanks*

Zoomie: Exactly! A big, filling "linner," or "dunch."

Nerissa: Ohgod, you just dislodged some vivid visual memories. Baseball-glove skin and skinny wrinkles.

s'kat: We mighta waited, oh, an hour. That's too long for most of us hungry gals. But it still didn't work. Needed more juice.

I am just marveling that you could look at the crumb on that bread and think about anything involved with it being less than perfect. As if you would want to be patient just so those gorgeous holes could have their life crushed by a plate!

*boinky* gak! my usual usage of the word is so close to the topic and yet so far from working in that context...

Kitchenmage: Well, it *was* a good sandwich.
As for "boinky," have I shamed myself? Because long before Bruce Willis was tossing that slang around, I independently invented the word for myself. I guess my meaning ("perky") never caught on... Still... Somehow it works. :D
