'Tis the Seasonal

Boy, a local, seasonal eater could go a little crazy these days. The summer's bounty has culminated in a full-on harvest, right here in the middle of a sunny October, and who am I to disobey?
So lunch — on the patio — yesterday was one of those insouciant melanges of "What do we need to eat up, honey?"
We had a couple of tomatoes, set aside from the mini-marathon of tomato sauce-making. We had some cukes and onions. As usual, there were pitted kalamata olives in the fridge, and a beautiful hunk of feta cheese. Oh, but wait.
There were figs.
And why not, I ask you?
Cut, toss, douse with olive oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper. (We forgot to use the onion, but I'm 99% certain it might almost have been close to nearly perfect with the figs. I wasn't afraid to try. But we forgot.)
For everybody else, 2006 seemed to be the year to combine watermelon with tomatoes. For us, it was figs and tomatoes, and it was good.

No proscuitto? Ah well. Yeah, here it is mid October and we're still getting some outstanding fresh fruits and veggies, especially the maters. I suppose we'll have to suffer through it all.

Biggles: Someone tried to tell me once that figs have so much insect material in them, you can't consider them vegetarian. Does that count? :D

I want a bite! Inovation tastes good!

I think it's a fantastic idea. Figs are really hard to get here, sigh.

You're getting right down giddy with your Indian Summer combos. I love it. Figs and tomatoes are so much the same in so many ways, no? (Nevermind the insects!) It's fun to see what you're doing with the treasures we're getting. I am carefully monitoring four pears hanging over my side of the fence from my neighbor's tree. Can't wait till they are pressable at the stem, which means they're ready. If the Stellar jays don't get them first.

Stacie: Oh golly. That's the slogan, yes.

Kalyn: I'm ashamed to tell you I often overlook the fig season myself, and I think it's twice a summer in CA.

Kudzu: Yeah, giddy! Now, if you drape a shade cloth or bird netting over those pears, maybe you'll have them for yourself. Birds always peck holes in fruit the day *before* you planned to pick it. (Pressable at the stem; must embed in memory.)

Catherine: I'm excited already, but you must promise me you'll go see my sweet-potato pancake.

frosts here came early. so i'm getting to know squash and pumpkin...and warm enough weather to eat a sunny lunch out on the patio. turtlenecks help quite a bit with that.

Hey Biggles! Cool.

Hey Vanessa: My only complaint about summer is not being able to wear turtlenecks!
