Refrigerator Superfund Site

We are still actively cleaning out food from the freezer and refrigerator, on Day 10 of the Ice Harvest.
In our search and rescue mission, we found a bit of produce that has ceased the productive portion of its stayover in the crisper drawer.
A few (a few??) weeks ago we bought a mini red cabbage for [scratches head] I can't remember what! Something purple, I believe. I recall we didn't think we'd need a lot of it, so it was convenient to find such a little one.
But we failed. Failed to make the dish (or even remember what it was supposed to be). Failed to reassign the little red cabbage to another use. Failed to rescue the poor purple globe before it bit the dust. Er. Or, the "rotties" bit it.
It had to be ejected from the house today, as part of the EPA's Contaminated Sediment Remediation Guidance.
I hate when that happens.
On the other hand [brightens visibly]!
I finally pickled the radishes, turnips, cauliflower and a sack of nearly-dead mushrooms in the leftover sake-soy sauce pickling mixture.
I'm not sure I got to the mushrooms in time — they may be a bit too sticky for my liking — but the other veggies are now tinted with a dreamy, Rembrandt-esque shade of golden brown.
And the salt in the bath will surely help preserve them a few days longer.
Until I can finally regain a vestige of my appetite and get around to eating them.

Glad to see that you finally made it to the produce.

That's a great photo, CC. I am a pickle fan. I'll eat almost anything --anything vegetable, that is, I draw the line at pig's feet--if it's been pickled. When I lived in Vienna I developed a deep and personal relationship with the sauerkraut man at the open air market there, but I've never made my own. Ah, a new obsession: learn how to pickle. Thanks for the inspiration.

CC,

Day 10? Your dedication is awe-inspiring. And frightening.

"'bout time, cookie." Congrats! This is a great idea (pickling) - I might have to borrow when we start cleaning things out...er, someday. I think you're also the purple queen - you make and eat more purple food than any other blogger I know! I love it!

Michelle: Me? Purple food? Oh god, you're right. I have half a sack of purple potatoes and a purple onion on the counter, even as we speak! (Needing to be consumed, needless to say.)
Tea (and Michelle): Pickling can be super easy, or you can go the fermentation route (as in sauerkraut). Both are loads of fun, and delicious if you have a sour-tooth, like I do.
Dagny and Kevin: The awful truth is, we fell off the wagon yesterday and bought an egg-salad sandwich. (40 lashes!!) Sorry, Kevin! Didn't mean to frighten you.

I get your Amana Freezerburn thing, dawl, but I forgot to tell you.

Hope I can come up that way when the sun comes back. We've got one more night in Stinson Beach coming to us from a trade I did...would love to meet you en route to visiting a couple of farms up there.

Tana: That would be entirely doable!
