The next day we got in the car and ate our way across the country and back.
Ribs from Arthur Bryant's in Kansas City, fresh-caught trout fried in butter in Big Horn National Forest (with a leftover bottle of wedding champagne), lobster and clams and blue fish pâté in Nantucket, deep-dish pizza at Gino's in Chicago. Oh, yes, and Slim Jims and a sixpack in a motel basement room in Grand Rapids during a tornado. Memorable.

  2. What can I say? It seems as if you have shed some of that sweet and romantic air but I might be wrong...
Lots and lots of congratulations and continue to enjoy yourselves and each other for a verrrry long time yet!

  5. Felicitations! So those rings must be silver? There's an Italian saying, "The measure of love is love without measure." Happy Anniversary to you both.

  6. Happy "Silver" Anniversary!

I raise my glass to you both. More champagne...?

    Tootles,

    Anni :-)

  9. I love the picture, you are beautiful! I like seeing Cranky before he was "cranky + enamored" and when he was just "enamored." Also, I like the way you look as if you are saying, "Go ahead Cranky, eat your heart out!"

  10. Ahh... We weren't all that sweet and naive then! I'm sure he married me for my bitchy streak and sailor's mouth. I married him for his pronounceable last name and collection of food books.
The "silver" rings ended up being titanium. Kinda dirty gray, hipster metal.
So we'll just have to ride around in our silver Subaru, toasting a quarter century. Wow.
    Thanks, everyone!

  11. My goodness you two look sweet (not mad or cranky at all). What a lovely photo, thank you so much for sharing. Here's to many more shared meals together, and mad crankiness. Congratulations!

  12. Awwwww....

Have we started a trend? Will we be seeing more wedding pics in Gastroblogia?

  13. Except for the fashion (is that Gunne Sax?), you two look almost exactly the same--I'd have recognized you anywhere!

Many, many congrats. Here's to a wonderful couple.

  14. Hang on a minute... 1981 is POST punk but you were still wearing holly hobbie dresses in America?

Or maybe you were actually going for the "new-romantic" look? That would make sense, timing wise.

Glad that 25 years down the line you two are still as romantic as ever.
Here's to many more reasons to celebrate in the future...!

  15. CC,
So you were what, 17? Pretty little thing, though. Cranky looks like a Cuban lounge singer.

  17. Oh my god. You married my brother. Or his twin.

    Congratulations. Here's to another 25, 'sister-in-law'.

  18. Gunne Sax? Holly Hobbie? Ohgod, excuse me while I slit my wrists... See, it was Stanford Memorial Church, and we were honoring the "Victorian-ness" of the venue... Gulp. I think.
But it's fun to find out I'm a polygamist... :D

  19. Let's hear it for the sailor's mouth and the bitchy streak. Does that also make you an alto?

    : D

You two are beautiful: happy anniversary!

  20. Happy Ann! HOOYAH !!!

    Sam,

But but but, but. I was hanging out in clubs in Berkeley and SF knocking myself in to brick walls all to the tune of local punk bands in 1981. I suppose we were taking it all on a little late eh?

  21. Biggles: Wait... Mabuhay? Were you the a-hole that... Never mind, I was having too much fun to care. :)
    Thanks.

  22. Hey Cookie,

Yeah, that was me. Screaming at the top of my lungs for hours on end, knocking stuff over and ... uh yeah. Yup.

  25. Thanks Catherine. And Tana. (@#%$$!)
And Mike: There was a *little* time off for bad behavior, but on the whole, we hung in there and hooray. One nice thing about digging out that old photo, apart from seeing our younger, dewier selves, is discovering that a quarter of a century really hasn't ravaged us too very much, and I want to wish ALL of us another happy 25!

What a great memory - what a great story! Congrats!

  27. Of course i'm late again but that's me, always late!

Happy anniversary and many congratulations to you two! Here's to another 25 years... :)

  28. Congratulations indeed!

And? I am so sorry you set foot in Grand Rapids. I was there when you were: it's my hometown. And I fled as soon as I could.

Slim Jims and a six-pack are about the height of culinary sophistication for that place!

  29. Thanks, Rosie, Mae and Lastewie (I mean Jenny!).
We picked up my new ring the day before yesterday; Cranky's will be ready in about a week. Wow, this is fun.
